SUDAN NEWS ALERT: Bloomberg – Ethiopia Accuses Sudan of Killing Civilians in Border Row
Bloomberg report on accusations from Ethiopia that Sudanese troops are killing “many civilians” in recent fighting in the disputed border area of al-Fashqa.
According to Dina Mufti, spokesman for Ethiopia’s Foreign Ministry, Ethiopian authorities observed Sudanese military forces carrying out organised attacks using heavy machine guns and armoured convoys at their border. Ethiopian farmers in the region had their properties looted, while “many civilians have been murdered and wounded,” Mufti added.
Sudanese Foreign Minister Omar Gamraldin played down the prospect of the conflict escalating, saying the government will use diplomatic channels to resolve the dispute.
With Amhara militiamen mobilising in the area and claiming areas that are within Sudanese territory, the Atlantic Council’s Cameron Hudson warned they are “asserting a renewed aggressiveness on the border that could result in further provocations…if left unchecked, it represents the kind of ‘low probability, high impact’ scenario that could have devastating and far-reaching consequences.”
