27/5/19: AP – Sudan’s leading opposition party rejects strike call

AP reports that the Umma Party, a leading opposition party in Sudan, said it has refused a call by protest leaders for a two-day general strike, in a sign of divisions within the pro-democracy movement that is challenging military rule in Sudan.

The Umma Party, led by Sadig Al Mahdi, Sudan’s last democratically elected leader, said that it opposes the “preparations and timing” of the strike. However, it said authorities do not have the right to fire those who take part in the planned strike.

The Umma Party is a member of the Declaration of Freedom and Change coalition that is representing the protesters and opposition parties in negotiations with the military council.
