SUDAN NEWS ALERT: Sudan Tribune - Sudan’s FFC under pressure to form new ‘broad-based’ cabinet

12/10/2021: Sudan Tribune - Sudan’s FFC under pressure to form new ‘broad-based’ cabinet

Sudan Tribune report that pressure is mounting on the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) to dissolve the cabinet after calls by the head of the Sovereign Council Abdulfattah al-Burhan and the National Accord splinter of the FFC to form a new "broad-based" transitional government.

The transitional government headed by Abdalla Hamdok faces three challenges: strife with a tribal group in eastern Sudan that blocks seaports and roads, conflict with the military component that “paralyses” transitional institutions and an FFC faction that wants more shares in the government.

In response to the calls, Mutaz Saleh, a member of the ruling FFC Central Council, told the Sudan Tribune that only the FFC, not al-Burhan, has the authority to dissolve the cabinet. He further questioned how al-Burhan claims the government has no solution for the eastern Sudan crisis while it “emanated from the peace agreement the military negotiated with the armed groups”.

12/10/2021: Radio Dabanga - El Burhan: Current Sudan govt must be dissolved

Addressing soldiers, Radio Dabanga report that the head of the ruling Sovereign Council and the army, Abdelfattah al-Burhan, called for the dissolution of the transitional government

Al-Burhan accused some political forces of fabricating troubles with the army to distract the public opinion and called for a new "broad-based" cabinet.

"The armed forces demand a return to the founding platform to reunite the national political forces, except for the National Congress Party (of Omar al-Bashir)," he said.

"Civilians’ attempts to continue the partnership in its previous form are rejected. There is no solution to the current situation without dissolving the government," he stressed.

SUDAN NEWS ALERT: Radio Dabanga - Ethiopian gunmen prevent harvest in eastern Sudan

12/10/2020: Radio Dabanga - Ethiopian gunmen prevent harvest in eastern Sudan

Radio Dabanga report that Ethiopian gunmen (known as shifta) are wreaking havoc on al-Garadif-Ethiopia border, according to the Lands Committee of al-Fashaga.

The shifta reportedly prevented farmers from the villages of Jemeiza and Um Disa in East al-Galabat from harvesting their sesame crops.

The Ethiopian militiamen are still controlling Sudanese agricultural lands,” the Lands Committee said, adding that “they launch sporadic attacks during the harvest season on areas not under their full control in order to steal the crops.”

In August, shifta reportedly stole 9,000 cows, sheep and camels, committed murders and were involved in kidnapping in al-Fashaga locality. In May, Ethiopian gunmen, supported by the Ethiopian army, killed a Sudanese army captain.

The borders between Ethiopia and Sudan have never been clearly demarcated since the colonial times, paving the way for Ethiopia militants to occupy al-Gadarif farmlands.

Radio Dabanga report that young Sudanese are not active in ‘traditional’ Sudanese political parties, according to Dr Azza Mustafa, a former professor of political science at Alzaiem Alazhari University in Khartoum and specialist on democracy and political parties.

Dr Mustafa said young Sudanese do not find “the old political programmes” attractive, that the youth are being “alienated” by political parties that do not accommodate them, and “still do what they did 50 years ago.”

She called on “all political parties to reformulate their programmes, so that they will address the issues of all segments of society, especially youth and women “otherwise they will lose the support of young people, who will be important in the election process.”

Faki Mohamed, leading member of the Kassala Resistance Committees, Asaad El Taher, a youth leader in Darfur, both said youth should be better represented in policy-making given their “leading role” in overthrowing al-Bashir.
