26/10/19: Sudan Tribune - Sudanese women call to amend gender discriminatory laws

Sudan Tribune reports that Sudanese women representatives across the country have called on the transitional government to review laws violating women’s rights.

65 female delegates from different regions in Sudan held a meeting organised by the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA Network). The meeting was the Sudan’s ministers of Justice (Nasreldin Abdelbari) and Social Development and Labour (Lena Mahjoub).

SIHA said the participants called for the transitional government to strengthen women’s roles in achieving food security, poverty reduction, and access to health services, education and housing.

SIHA called for a comprehensive transitional justice programme for combating violence in conflict areas.

The meeting also called on the government to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), and fulfil all obligations that promote the rights of women in international charters and conventions.
