SUDAN INSIGHT ALERT: Just Security – Bringing the Rule of Law to Sudan
1/10/19: Just Security – Bringing the Rule of Law to Sudan, by Rebecca Hamilton
In calls to support Sudanese democracy advocates, Rebecca Hamilton suggests that the international community should view Sudan’s removal from the US terror list and access to external debt relief “as an essential part of a strategy to fend off the domestic opponents of a democratic Sudan (and their regional supporters).”
With Sudanese justice minister Nasredeen Abdelbari and foreign minister Asmaa Abdalla seeking to integrate Sudan into UN human rights framework, Hamilton argues that civilian officials in the transitional government “seem to be judging correctly that those who benefited most under the corruption of the former regime could shutter the [democratic] window of opportunity.”
Thus, she states that civilians in the transitional understand that the promise of economic stabilization and the reintegration of Sudan into the international community is necessary to secure the public support needed to weather the challenging times ahead.
