SUDAN INSIGHT ALERT: Radio Dabanga - Op-ed: As peacekeepers leave, violence returns to Darfur
Rebecca Tinsley, the founder of Waging Peace, which campaigns on Darfur with Sudanese diaspora in the UK, argues that the January 2021 massacre in al-Geneina in West Darfur “raises questions” about the decision to withdraw the UN-African Union joint peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID) “before armed militias had been disarmed and held accountable for their actions”.
Niemat al-Mahdi of the Darfur Women Action Group was quoted saying: “it’s too early to abandon the people of Darfur without sustainable solutions on the ground. What happened is the result of the state's failure and the lack of political will at the central level to protect the civilians, disarm militias or hold criminals accountable.”
