SUDAN INSIGHT ALERT: Bloomberg – A Former Pariah That Hosted Bin Laden Now Courts Global Approval
In a feature piece, Bloomberg quote analysts on Sudan’s attempts to get its state sponsor of terrorism (SST) designation lifted.
With Sudan seeking normalisation with Israel, Jonas Horner, a senior Sudan analyst at the International Crisis Group, said “overt Israeli endorsement of a lift for Sudan will provide a key push to the US government” to remove Sudan from the SST list.
However, Lauren Blanchard, an Africa analyst for the US Congress, noted that while the SST designation is a reputational risk for investors, “concerns about corruption, outdated infrastructure and economic fragility may still deter investment for some time.”
Nonetheless, Sudan’s Information Minister Faisal Mohammed Salih said “we need to show the world that the new Sudan is a democratic place, and conducive to investments, tourism and other forms of engagement.”
Salih also labelled it “unfair” that Sudanese people pay the price of al-Bashir’s regime.
