SUDAN INSIGHT ALERT: Reuters - Distrust mars deal to relaunch Sudan's transition
15/12/2022: Reuters - Distrust mars deal to relaunch Sudan's transition, by Khalid Abdelaziz and Aidan Lewis
Reuters report on analyst reactions to the framework agreement.
While the deal attempts to tackle issues that fuelled civilian-military tensions before the coup - reform of the security forces, justice for civilians killed during protests, dismantling [ex-president Omar] al-Bashir's regime and resolving internal conflicts – Khaled al-Tijani, editor of Elaph newspaper, said they “could be the future cause of the agreement's collapse”:
With the agreement keeping military leaders in their roles, Rift Valley Institute fellow Magdi al-Gizouli said the door is open for military intervention in civilian affairs and “a door closed to civilian intervention in military affairs,” adding that the signatories “have quite limited public trust in them”.
Kholood Khair, director of Confluence Partners, said the risk of the military continuing to meddle in policy while passing the burden of governing amid an economic crisis and worsening humanitarian situation to civilians “would be very destabilising”.
