SUDAN INSIGHT ALERT: Independent - ‘Isis will be small fry’: Sudanese PM warns country will implode unless US sanctions are lifted
Ahead of his trip to Washington, Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok told the Independent that US sanctions on Sudan due to the state sponsor of terrorism designation are hastening Sudan’s economic collapse, and that the destruction caused by a failed Sudanese state would be minor in comparison to that caused by ISIS.
Hamdok warned that a failed Sudanese state would have regional repercussions, citing Sudan’s unique geopolitical and geographical position, bordering seven countries “in a sea of misery” within North Africa.
Hamdok further warned that sanctions are weakening Sudan’s new civilian leaders as they are unable to address the demands of the revolution. Hamdok added that sanctions are hampering investment, as well as debt restructuring and relationships with international financial institutions.
With the US concerned about the power of Sudanese military, Hamdok said that the Rapid Support Forces are being reformed.
